Alma Cummings’ paintings are formed intuitively with wax, oil and mixed media on board. Fabric, string, beads, foil, and assorted objects are imbedded in wax and paint. The pieces are often assembled to capture a moment of “becoming”. The materials compositionally search for an order, but encompass the man-made flotsam that melds with natural forces.
The abstract image evokes a feeling that is well suited to address elemental themes. Symbols of birth and death, growth and dissolution, lost and found, and that which was once precious but is now decayed and dark all speak of the sometimes quiet, occasionally traumatic forces of change.
Alma Cummings has a Masters of Fine Arts Degree from University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and currently has a studio in New Bedford, MA. In recent years she has shown at the New Bedford Art Museum, the Bristol Art Museum, the Judith Klein Gallery, Colo Colo Gallery in New Bedford and Galatea Fine Art in Boston.
